Lulu Martinez is a bilingual California native that grew up in a health and fitness orientated family. She became a massage therapist due to her fascination with the human anatomy and holistic medicine. She studied at The National Holistic Institute in Studio City and has been a Certified Massage Therapist for 10 years. Due to a back injury she became interested in Pilates as a form of physical therapy. The combination of massage and Pilates can transform your body while eliminating pain. She did her research on Risa Sheppard and was impressed with her innovative Pilates techniques and knowledge. This led her to train at Sheppard’s Method in Westwood, CA. She has been teaching Pilates mat and reformer classes for over 2 years now. She particularly connects with clients with injuries and her goals are to see people not only feel better but become stronger. She is enthusiastic about challenging her clients and seeing them love their bodies. She became a runner due to the strength she gained from Pilates. She is an avid animal lover and loves to talk about cooking, healthy recipes, hiking, and music.

Doctor Betty grew up in East Los Angeles, the only girl in a family of 4 boys. She excelled in sports and in high school the desire to become a doctor and still work with atheletes inspired her to become a chiropractor. She graduated from Bravo Medical Magnet and began her postgraduate studies at East L.A. College. Dr. Betty is a California Licensed Doctor of Chiropractic. A graduate from The Southern California University of Health Sciences ( formerly Los Angeles College of Chiropractic) in 2002 with a doctorate degree. She completed her preceptorship at a high volume clinic in East Los Angeles and remained there for two years. Motherhood came calling and so she took time off to raise her two boys but stilled remained dedicated to her craft and continued treating friends and family.

Dr. Betty enjoys the dynamic of a family based practice and enjoys working with children to the elderly. She is trained in various adjusting techniques including Activator, Flexion Distraction and the traditional Manual Diversified Technique. Also, she is excellent with trigger point work especially to the head and neck. Dr. Betty enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, cooking, baking, gardening and entertaining. She looks forward to helping backs bend better and working with the people in the community.

Chiropractic, what is it?

Doctors of Chiropractic- often referred to as chiropractors or chiropractic physicians- practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called “chiropractic adjustment.”

The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypo mobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal. Treatment also includes exercises and health and lifestyle counseling.

Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.

Pilates taught here at Back Benders are done on a mat- know as floor work and also on the Pilates reformer. Two of the key elements of Pilates are core muscle strength* and spinal alignment. The core musculature is loosely defined as the spine, abdomen, pelvis, hips, and the muscles that support these structures. Some of the main core muscles are the erector spinae (located in your back along your spine), the internal and external obliques (the sides of your abdomen), the transverse abdominis (located deep in your gut, this muscle pulls your belly button in toward your spine), the rectus abdominis (the “six-pack”), and hip flexors (in your pelvis and upper leg). Basically, your core is nature’s girdle. The stronger it is, the better supported your back is. That contributes to less pain and strain and an overall healthier low back not to mention better posture and of course a great set of abs.

Despite the somewhat medieval name, the Pilates reformer is actually an amazingly elegant machine. The reformer provides finely tuned exercise resistance that allows one to work very precisely to develop proper alignment, core strength and flexibility. These things in turn lead to daily life improvements like better posture, graceful, efficient movement, and for many, relief from pain associated with physical imbalances such as back pain.

Exercising with the reformer is possible for anyone, at any level of fitness. It’s no wonder the full name of the reformer is the Universal Reformer.
