The Intake

If you’re new to Back Benders, you and your Pilates instructor will review your intake form and go over your past injury and physical history, as well as any present aches and pains. You’ll also address your fitness goals, which totally vary from client to client. Your goals can be anything from losing the baby weight to relieving back pain. It totally depends on you.

The Basics

From there, you’ll begin with reviewing the basic proper postural alignment and muscular engagement. Even if you’ve done Pilates before, you’ll go over the basic moves so your Pilates instrucotr can assess your Pilates prowess.

The Equipment

Then, you’ll move on to the machines. After your instructor sees how quickly your body responds to the movements, adjustments, and positions, at the end of our session your Pilates instructor will suggest a program for you depending upon your skill level, goals, and needs.

Pilates is a super innovative and complete mind-body, resistance-based workout using both your own body’s resistance and external resistance in the form of the Pilates equipment, balls, and light weights.

Pilates focuses on your core mind-body connection of breath to movement. We work with slower, more conscious resistance-based movement, focusing on form and working the muscles in proper posture and neutral spine alignment, to strengthen your core, improve your flexibility, posture, and balance, and help prevent and relieve pain symptoms. Don’t be frightened by the medieval-torture-looking equipment! We swear it’s good for you.

Pilates FAQs

What will my first Pilates session be like?

If you’re new to Back Benders, we’ll review your intake form and go over your past injury and physical history, as well as any present aches and pains. We’ll also address your fitness goals, which totally vary from client to client. Your goals can be anything from losing the baby weight to relieving back pain. It totally depends on you.

What if I don't work out regularly?

Not a prob! Pilates is perfect from everyone from beginners learning how to exercise in proper alignment, to advanced exercises looking to work their muscle fibers differently, or incorporate some variety into their regular routine.

Can I still do Pilates if I'm injured?

Of course! One of the best parts about working at Back Benders, is the cross communication between Dr. B, the massage therapists, and me! We all know how to work around and with your injuries, so even while parts of you are recovering, we can still keep the rest of you flexible and fit.”

How many sessions do I need to see results?

We had a saying in my Pilates teacher training: 10 sessions you’ll feel different, 20 sessions you’ll notice a difference in your clothes, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body!

It really all depends on your fitness goals and the time you’re willing to dedicate to achieving them. I normally recommend two sessions a week, so you have greater ‘muscle memory.’ I tell all my clients that Pilates is like learning a whole new language for your body, and like any language, the more frequently you practice it, the better you remember.”

How long is a session?

Your Pilates session is a 55 minute hour. The extra five minutes allows for us to book your next appointment, clean the machines, and prepare for the next client.

What are semi-privates?

Semi privates are a cost effective way to do private Pilates. It’s just you, a partner, and the instructor. Thus, you get the similar benefits of one-on-one instruction, for half the price! If you bring a friend as a partner he/she must complete their initial private first. We also have many clients who are in need of partners, so we can happily pair you up as well with someone who matches your skill level. However, depending upon availability, this may take a few weeks to a few months to find an appropriate partner.

This is also based on instructor approval. If you’re suffering from chronic pain or specific injuries, you should stick to privates for a while.
